As excitement about this summer’s Paralympic Games continuing to grow, deaf children from across the country gathered in Derby on Tuesday 7 February for the annual five-a-side football tournament.
More than 30 teams from across the country took part in the tournament, held at Powerleague, with teams travelling from as far as Exeter and London, in spite of the weather conditions. The tournament was organised by Royal School for the Deaf Derby alongside the National Deaf Children’s Sports Association (NDCSA) and the Football Association.
Teams competed in three competitions – Senior Boys, Junior Boys and Girls. Matches in all three competitions were hard fought but the host teams managed to make a big mark on the competition with the Derby Girls’ team winning their competition, whilst the Junior Boys finished as runners-up.
Kath Sergeant from Royal School for the Deaf Derby said, ‘The competition was a fantastic demonstration of the quality and commitment that we see every day from our pupils. The tournament was very competitive but many new friendships were made between the pupils taking part. To see the Derby girls’ team winning the trophy was very exciting and a testament to the work they put it.’
‘Alongside the competition, Jessica Everhurst, a member of the England Women’s Deaf Football Squad delivered a coaching session to a group of Primary Students who are looking to enter the competition next year. Having a role model like that on hand can only help to inspire our pupils to strive to get better and better. Hopefully, the Paralympic Games this summer will give further impetus to the ambitions of our pupils and inspire them to get involved with sport,’ she added.
