Look Back at Autumn Term

From cross country in September through to Girls Football in late December, the autumn term has been busy for Derby schools taking part in our events, competitions and festivals.

43 different School Games competitions and festivals have taken place through the first term of the academic year, with schools able to play a range of traditional and not-so traditional sports. Many have seen winners progress to Derbyshire finals with others done purely for enjoyment and to engage children in healthy physical activity.

Secondary Schools Spring Into Action

  Secondary Schools took their turn on the floor for the Key Stage 3 & 4 Gymnastics competition on Thursday morning. Having hosted Year 5&6 pupils the previous week, Mickleover Gymnastics Club was again the venue for the older gymnasts. Competition was split into Level 1 for non-club gymnasts and Level 2 for club gymnasts, with each requiring competitors to complete set routines on floor, vault and body management. Oakwood teams top the Christmas Futsal Tree!

Oakwood Junior School retained the title they won in 2014-15 as their Y4/5 Futsal A and B teams played off in the final of this year’s event.


Eight teams participated in a series of goal-filled group stage games before playing positional fixtures against the equivalent finishing team from the other group. These games saw Portway Junior take the Bronze award by beating Cavendish Close Junior.

Schools Have a N-ice Time at Winter Sports Fest

Derby’s Ice Rink and Silk Mill Museum played host to our third annual winter sports festival over two days in November and December.

The festival saw more than 150 children from across Derby enjoy a taste of ice skating on the temporary ice rink, as well as trying their hand at new age kurling in the Silk Mill.

The Museum staff also provided a Christmas-themed ‘Escape Room’ task, which saw pupils solving a series of challenges in order to unlock the doors at the end of the session.
