January Monthly Update
January has been a busy start to the new calendar year. We hope everyone has settled back into the swing of things and that everyone had a great break.
Week 1 commencing 7th January
On Thursday 10th January 2019 we held our Primary Individual Table Tennis tournament at Derby Moor. Six schools were represented on the night; Arboretum Primary, Zaytouna Primary, Chellaston Junior, Ravensdale Junior, Brackensdale Primary and Silverhill Primary. There were 21 boys and 20 girls who took part, with the top players qualifying for county finals. After all players had completed there games the top three places were as follow, in the boys competition:
Gold – Arboretum 3
Silver – Arboretum 1
Bronze – Arboretum 2
In the girls competition:
Gold – Zaytouna 1
Silver – Zaytouna 3
Bronze – Brackensdale 2
Thank you all players for making the tournament run so smoothly and congratulations to those who have qualified.
Week 2 commencing 14th January
On the 15th January we were at Darley Park for our Winter Seasonal Walk event, this allowed schools to take a walk around the park and complete a scavenger hunt on their way. We had 219 children throughout the day from; Bishop Lonsdale, St George’s Primary, Lakeside Priamry, Village Primary, Breadsall Hilltop Primary and Cherry Tree Primary. Thank you all for coming and we hope you had a great time.
Wednesday 16th January brought with it our Boccia Plus and Primary Boccia events at Derby Arena. In the morning we had over 80 participants for our Boccia Plus event coming from 11 schools. Boccia is a Paralympic sport very similar to boules or pétanque where the team whose ball is closest to the jack wins. The afternoon allowed another 12 teams to attend bringing with them 75 new participants. Thank you to Ashgate Primary, St James’ Junior, Arboretum Primary, St Werburgh’s, Meadow Farm Primary, Dale Primary, Chellaston Primary, Portway Junior, Cherry Tree Primary, Reigate Park Primary, St Albans Primary, St Peter’s Junior, Ravensdale Junior, Walter Evans and Bemrose Primary for attending.
On the evening of the 17th, we were at da Vinci for KS3/4 Trampolining. Their were some great routines and skills shown by gymnasts from West Park, Noel Baker, Merrill and da Vinci. Congratulations to all participants.
Week 3 commencing 21st January
Our week started with Football Plus and Girls Football Festival on Tuesday 22nd January. The morning began with 9 teams bringing with them 77 players, St James’ Junior, Dale Primary, Bishop Lonsdale, Redwood Primary, Chellaston Junior, St Martins, Cherry Tree Primary, Pennine Way and Lakeside Primary were all represented. In the afternoon their were 10 teams at our Girls Football Festival representing; Cavendish Close Junior, St James’ Junior, Arboretum Primary, Ashcroft Primary, Meadow Farm, Dale Primary, Brackensdale, Ashgate Primary and Chellaston Junior. Well played everyone.
On Wednesday morning we were at Derbyshire Tennis Centre for Sportshall Athletics Plus. Nine teams competed (St James’ Junior, St George’s, Lawn Primary, Dale Primary, Hardwick Primary, Chellaston Junior, Cherry Tree Primary, St Clare’s School and Lakeside Primary) bringing with them 111 participants. The first half of the morning consisted of teams rotating around a carousel of field events; chest push, standing long jump, speed bounce, target throw and javelin. After all teams had completed the field events we moved onto track events, these consisted of short lap relay, long lap relay and hurdle relay. We would like to give a special shout out to a girl from Chellaston Junior who stopped running her race to check that another girl was alright after tripping during their race. True sportsmanship shown and a massive congratulations to all participants.
In the evening we continued our Sportshall Athletics theme and were at West Park for our Year 7 event. There was a great turnout with teams from Littleover, Lees Brook, Woodlands, Derby Cathedral, Noel Baker and West Park competing. Athletes were able to compete in track races and field events ranging from standing triple jump to vertical jump and 1 lap races to an 8 lap paarlauf. The results were then calculated and the top two teams qualified for the county final. Well done to all athletes who took part.
Thursday 24th January was our annual conference themed around Creating a Culture of Active, Healthy Learners. In the morning we had talks from Ali Oliver of the Youth Sport Trust, Arwen Green, Bishop Lonsdale and a keynote from Martin Burder of The Art of Brilliance. We even had guest appearances from the SSP mascots for an Active Blast routine. There was then a presentation for the Level 3,5 and 6 candidates which was followed by lunch. The afternoon was dedicated to workshops, there were three options; High Quality PE, Active Storytelling and an Active, Healthy, Learning carousel. The whole day ran smoothly so thank you to all who attended and we hope you all took something positive away from the conference.
Week 4 commencing 28th January
New Age Kurling Plus and Primary New Age Kurling at Derby Arena was where we were on Tuesday. New Age Kurling is an indoor version of curling, this means its warmer and more accessible for children to try. The game is played in the same way that it is in the Winter Olympics, each team has four stones and the team whose stone is closest to the centre of the target (house) wins. In the morning we had 9 teams attend our NAK Plus event (St James’ Junior, St Peter’s, Meadow Farm, Dale Primary, Pennine Way, Lakeside Primary, St Clare’s School). All teams played 8 games and at the end of the morning the top three teams were; Meadow Farm, St Peter’s A and Lakeside Primary. Well done to all teams who attended.
In the afternoon we had Primary NAK with 12 teams from St James’ Junior, Meadow Farm, St Werburgh’s, Zaytouna, Dale Primary, Village Primary and Silverhill. The teams played 5 games against the other schools and the top three finished; St James’ B, Meadow Farm and St Werburgh’s. Once again congratulations to all participants.
On Wednesday we were at the Arena again, this time hosting our Fitness is Fun festival. This event consisted of a HIIT workout, FUNdamental and animal travels, alphabet fitness, front support activities and a fitness circuit to finish. Across the day we had 174 participants from St Chad’s Infants, Bishop Lonsdale, Parkview and Lawn. Then in the afternoon we had Zaytouna Primary, Ashgate Primary and Bemrose.
Lastly, Thursday 31st January was our Y3/4 Gymnastics competition at Mickleover Gymnastics Club. In the morning we had 34 gymnasts from Derby High, Silverhill Primary, Cavendish Close Junior and Roe Farm Primary. All gymnasts had to compete in three disciplines; Body Management, Vault and Floor routines. Then in the afternoon we had 44 gymnasts from St Peter’s Junior, Ravensdale Junior, Oakwood Junior, Chellaston Junior and Portway Junior. Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates were handed out for individual and team scores. In the morning the team results were:
Gold – Silverhill A
Silver – Derby High
Bronze – Silverhill B
Then in the afternoon:
Gold – Portway Junior A
Silver – Oakwood Junior A
Bronze – St Peter’s Junior
