February Week 2

February 2

We had a busy week to end the first half term of 2019, starting with Tuesday 12th and our day of Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics. Across the two sessions we had 419 athletes competing across 6 field events and 6 track events, there were also a total of 33 volunteers that helped the event to run as smoothly as possible. In the morning 9 teams (St James’ Junior, St Werburgh’s Primary, Oakwood Junior, Wren Park Primary, Roe Farm Primary, Hardwick Primary, Chellaston Junior, Aston on Trent Primary and Bishop Lonsdale Primary) competed for a chance to qualify for the County Finals and in the afternoon there were another 10 teams (Homefields Primary, Cavendish Close Junior, Silverhill Primary, Village Primary, Brookfield Primary, Ravensdale Junior, Walter Evans Primary, St Peter’s Junior, Ashwood Spencer Academy and Zaytouna Primary). Both sessions were heavily contested and the results for the morning session were:

1st – Roe Farm Primary

2nd – Aston on Trent Primary

3rd – Chellaston Junior

Then the afternoons top three were:

1st – Cavendish Close Junior

2nd – Walter Evans Primary

3rd – Homefields Primary

Only two teams can then qualify for County Finals so results were compared from across the two sessions to produce the overall results:

1st – Cavendish Close Junior

2nd – Walter Evans Primary

3rd – Roe Farm Primary

Thus meaning both Cavendish Close Junior and Walter Evans Primary have qualified for the County Finals. We would like to say a massive congratulations to all participants and thank you to all the volunteers.

On the 13th February we held our Cheerleading Festival at Derby Arena. Cara from the One School of Dance lead the festival with some choreography and then the groups were allowed to create their own routines to perform infront of everyone else at the end of the event. We had 5 schools attend (Bishop Lonsdale Primary, Cavendish Close Junior, Chellaston Junior, Ashgate Primary and Mickleover Primary) bringing with them a combined 75 cheerleaders. Well done to everyone on their great performance and thank you to Cara for leading the event.

Thursday evening was our Year 5/6 Mini Basketball event, there were 11 teams who competed in the competition (St James’ Junior, Roe Farm Primary, St Albans Primary, Ravensdale Junior, Brackensdale Primary, Oakwood Junior, Cottons Farm Primary, Markeaton Primary, Chellaston Junior and Dale Primary). All teams competed in a group stages which lead into a final and a 3rd/4th playoff. The standard of baskeball on show was great and the top three places went to:

1st – Oakwood Junior B

2nd – St Albans Primary

3rd – Chellaston Junior

A massive congratulations to all teams.

The half term finished with an Additional Fundamentals and Multi Sport Festival on Friday. There were two schools who attended the event (Mickleover Primary and St Mary’s Primary) and they rotated around 3 different sessions (Dodgeball, Tennis and Ball Sport Tag). Thank you to everyone who delivered and to all the participants.

Lastly, we need to give a massive shout out to Mrs Hickie from Bishop Lonsdale Primary who this week has retired after 27 years of service to PE and school sport. On behalf of all the children who you have worked with and hopefully set off on a lifelong love of sport, Thank You!
